I use the tools to plan the traveling and positioning. I have also started to use the tools when I shoot, but only when I dont have the time to use the officer. If there is a high risk of me getting spotted, I just put the periscope up, shoot by my own numbers and then pull back down. In case above, I had calculated when I should shoot but I never used it cuz there was no chance at all for the ships to spot me with my periscope up.
