How I feel about Silent Hunter

I am bored and not wanting to continue.

I am only lvl 7 and I am very tired of the same silly missions over and over again, I am yet to have been shot at in this game.... From what I understand there are actual military vessels in the game but I am yet to see one....

So while its a nice idea to let a new player adjust to the game and come to grips with it, this process takes entirely too long!

Torpedo's do entirely too little damage, while I understand the desire to steer people towards using there real life money to gain an advantage, torpedo's are a consumable that I would never ever be willing to spend real life money on in a game PERIOD....

Allow a torpedo to do a realistic amount of damage, sure 2 torps on a large hulled merchant make sense and maybe 5 on something like a battleship but you small merchants should not require more then ONE MOST OF THE TIME.... I am tired of using 2-3 to sink a silly 5000 ton ship....

Also what with the same merchant formation over and over and over again.... tired of it....

And the GAME DESPERATELY NEEDS the ability for a Sub to go hunt wherever it feel like just sit in a shipping lane waiting for that rare military group to sail by and maybe be able to sink a English Carrier from Day 1 in the game if your LUCKY enough to find it.... MISSIONS and LINEAR progression SUCK.....

So to sum up: Torpedo's are Silly, The lack of danger for too long is awful and No ability to search and hunt is bad, and being stuck doing Missions sucks.....

So all and all I quit out of boredom....

in real they needed sometimes also 2 torps on a single freighter or tanker, so in that case I believe this game is quite OK

but the whole training thing on merchants is to my opinion a good way to learn how to hunt/shoot etc. before you get in missions with escorts.
what would be your comment if at the first mission with an escort they immediately put a destroyer on your sub with ASDIC and also Hedgehogs? your sub would be blown out of the water within seconds if you haven't practiced before with easier targets. I think that if that would have happened to you in level 5 you would be complaining here that the level is way too difficult for a newbie

it is also in my view useless to use Rolls Royce like torpedoes like a T-XI G7es Zaunkönig II for a tanker or freighter

thing I agree is that certain levels are quite long. as I see now how long it takes me to do finish all campaigns and missions in it to be abe to build a VII E
after getting to level 35 I have reached the top, I don't get any higher but still need to do endless mission before I have unlocked missions to be able to buy a pressure hull or a special rudder for a VII E. I have PP enough, over 280.000 at the moment, even after building 2 x VII C41 and 1 VII C42

I am afraid that isn't going to change because they stopped further development of the game. whenever they would go on with it that would be the first point they need to look to

    thanks

thing I forgot to mention is also that when you would like to particpate in wolfpack you need to have at least some practice with escorts etc.
going into a WP with level 7 is to my opinion not suitable and might even danger other more experienced players and also their subs
loosing a type II A B, C or D isn't nice, (or damaged on certain level) but more or less to overcome. when you loose a VII A, C, C41, C42 or E due to someone playing in the same WP is quite expensive in crew, level of your sub and certain parts of it but also very time consuming
even if you have enough PP to build a new VII C41 as example: you need to build it, but also you need days to get all parts you need on level 5 again. without investing gold bars or real money it takes a lot of hours rebuilding a sub. you can only upgrade 5 items in a row

I had my first WP when I was at level 16, knowing what to do, how to operate silent, how I could blow an hunting escort out of the water before they knew what hit them, don't hit another sub by manoever, etc

to my opinion that is reason why there is some kind of training needed before advancing to higher level instead of jumping in fromthe start without knowing almost anything

for instance: my first mistake in a level with an escort was going down with full speed to periscope depth like I did with tankers. that cost me almost instantly my II C sub because of that noise. the escort knew where to find me, I "only" had 18 hours repair time

second mistake in later level was that there suddenly were escorts with strange red triangles and ping noise. suddenly I realised I was in bigger trouble than before with other escorts, these could actually find me without me making noise. just laying still at certain depth with engines on silent running wasn't enough

so yes, there is maybe much more to this game than someone would notice at first

I enjoy the game, but I'm tired of the constant disconnects.

I've checked everything I can on my end, and speedtests and pingtests look good. I'm in the USA, and used Lyon, France for a server test point (I don't know the real server location, so took a guess at a similar point to test to.)

Right now I'm tempted to just buy one of the SH games that won't require me to interact with what I consider to be a dreadful server.

I enjoy the game, but it's just not much fun having that red-X pop up so frequently.

Anyway, I'm taking a break for now. Have fun!

I completely understand you! (Thanks for taming down, btw)
And you are surely not the only one who feels so. Not the only one who checked and says "at my end all is okay". But...

but also SHO (servers in Paris) routinely is checking the servers and says " at my end all is okay". I mean connectivity, not the game errors.
What happens there? If you track your signal you will see it is send across the whole world and not directly to Paris. So please also have a view to the network providers. Often when some players (oh, living in the same region!) tell us about problems (red X's) I check for instance www.internetpulse.net and - oh wonder - several problems at some backbones.

Sample: currently I see two red marked boxes there - Verizon and Cogent. Are they in the U.S.? Christmas business? <-- presumptions only

@ SubCruiser: Thanks for replying with the perception from SHO's viewpoint.

Yes, you're entirely correct, and there are many possible points of failure aside from my equipment or the server in Paris.

Interestingly enough, I did log back into the game a few hours after my post, but mistakenly used Firefox instead of my usual choice of Chrome for a browser. Much to my surprise, I played approximately 2 hours and had only one yellow connection warning but it never turned to red. This is by far, the best performance I'd experienced in the past several weeks.

Today I decided to experiment. I could not fathom why Firefox might perform better than Chrome, but I tested both anyway. I guess it was just a coincidence that SHO behaved so well on Firefox last night, because today SHO is absolutely perfect for me, regardless of which browser I use.

For the moment at least, it seems that whatever was wrong has been corrected. I have no idea what was fixed or where the problem originated, but I successfully completed 2 missions today, with no errors or disconnects at all. This has not happened in a long time for me, so I'm very happy today!

Maybe I won't need to purchase SHO 3 or 4 after all!

Many many thanks for the neat reply!

Oh the bits and bytes move in mysterious ways.
Different players have different experiences with different browsers, by the way. I cannot know the hardware configuration and it depending driver chaos in every pc. My own experience is: Firefox - first choise for flash games, if it won't work I use Opera. Others swear by Chrome (or Iron, a derivate of Chromium).

Are there differences? Yes. Chrome has an own implemented flash player, different from the flash player you can load for all the other browsers.
Is the flash container technology stretched to it's limits with SHO? May be, may be not. For websites it's not the first choice anymore (html5 now). However, it's strictly recommended to keep the browser and the flash player up to date, sometimes changes of the settings or even a reset may be helpful.

Happy you're back in SHO and I hope furthermore without disconnects!

Below level 10, isn't focusing on phase 1 more logical? What level are you at now?
