V&W Class

The V and W class was an amalgam of six similar classes of destroyer built for the Royal Navy under the War Emergency Programme of the First World War and generally treated as one class. For their time they were among the most powerful and advanced ships of their type in the world, and set the trend for future British designs.

The Flower-class corvette

The Flower-class corvette (also referred to as the Gladiolus-class) was a British class of 267 corvettes used during World War II, as anti-submarine convoy escorts during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Like corvettes, sloops of that period were specialised convoy-defence vessels, except that sloops were larger, faster, possessed much superior anti-aircraft fire control and a heavy armament of high angle 4 inch guns while retaining excellent anti-submarine capability. They were designed to have a longer range than a destroyer at the expense of a lower top speed, while remaining capable of outrunning surfaced Type VII and Type IX U-boats.

The Hedgehog

The Hedgehog (also known as an Anti-Submarine Projector) was a forward-throwing anti-submarine weapon developed by the Royal Navy, during World War II. It was deployed on convoy escort warships such as destroyers and corvettes to supplement the depth charge. The weapon fired a number of small spigot mortar bombs from spiked fittings. The bombs exploded on contact,and achieved a higher sinking rate against submarines than depth charges did.

Ark Royal

Designed in 1934 to fit the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty. Her design differed from previous aircraft carriers. Ark Royal was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, instead of an add-on or part of the superstructure. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft, she had two hangar deck levels. She served during a period that first saw the extensive use of naval air power; a number of carrier tactics were developed and refined aboard Ark Royal.

County-class cruisers

The County-class was a class of heavy cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the years between the First and Second World Wars. They were the first post-war cruiser construction for the Royal Navy and were designed within the limits of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. Such ships, with a limit of 10,000 tons standard displacement and 8-inch calibre main guns may be referred to as "treaty cruisers" (the term "heavy cruiser" was not defined until the London Naval Treaty of 1930[1]).

The thirteen Counties were built in three distinct sub-classes: the Kent, London and Norfolk classes. They were the only 10,000-ton 8-inch gun, or "A", cruisers that the Royal Navy built. The Counties are remembered for their distinctive three-funnel layout and service in all the major naval theatres of World War II.
