crucial to the progress are the nodes, which look like a crown
for example:
phase III # closing off brit. sea lanes
BE 24 gate to the south atlantic, or AM 19 gate to the north atlantic
phase III # north atlantic offensive
AE 97 gate to the mid-atlantic, or AE 66 gate to the arctic-route
missions from other nodes aren't so important and you must not close it

the only major difference is that if you complete all nodes, the RAF will not bother you in that phase anymore. So, if all nodes in PH3 are ticked off, you can play any mission in PH3 without being attacked from the air.
