    Cool Engines L3 or L5

    Diesel Engines

When the game first started the player base said don't go past L3 on Diesel Engines.
Their reason, they said, was that there was a fuel bug, the higher Level 4 & 5 used a disproportionate amount of fuel.

I have boats with Engines @ L3, L4, & L5 and see not much difference in fuel use, with 2 knots min speed difference.

I'm wondering if the bug existed, or still makes some sort of difference ?

Atm I am upgrading my Type VIIe parts and have Engines at L3 so it would be good to get a fresh perspective.

Personally, I don't care if the fuel is only marginally higher for the speed.

    Thanks all

    Hi Knightz..

    Ohhh, there is difference.

I still have VIIC42 twice. One with Diesel Engine L1, the other L5.
Example: Skip course from Bunker WHV (AN95) to the center of AL 11...

    Results:

    21 ZRP , needs 51205 Diesel L1

    21 ZRP, needs 92096 Diesel L5, nearly doubled !

The biggest difference is shown from L1 to L5.

I won´t upgrade VIIE´s . Or at least one of them.

I don´t know if engines with L3 or L4 differ much, i never used them.

There are rumors, you can use a II D in Africa, if its engine is on L1.... could never try it out so far...

I think it´s the best option to have short and long range subs with L1 for range and L5 for speed.
But all in all it depends on your own playstyle....

    Hi KvC,

Am sure this does still exist - level 1 engines use about 30% less fuel than level 5 it has been said.

The increase in surface speed is marginal in comparison to fuel use, so it's a matter of choice (and practicallity against long distances) as to whether to upgrade or [k]not.

Do a test skip of a level 1 engine and other levels (with subs of same tech specs) and you will see the difference in fuel used.

    To avoid misunderstandings:

the range of a boat using diesel engines is calculated for the most economic drive at 8 kn. (under water 2 kn).
You can easily check it if you let your engineer calculate the max. range for every speed, knot by knot.

The difference in the consumption you have while skipping the course!

    Reason:
If you skip a course it's like warping = go with (more than) max speed. So the basis for the calculation during a jump always is the maximum speed!!
For every upgrade level you may need less fuel at 8 kn but for max speed (= max performance) you need more diesel (law of energy conservation + power curve).

wow Hammer that made me take notice & look further

Thank you for the replies Captains

It seems this is still a valid question and you've given a lot of info there to go through

Of course there is no need to upgrade engines the fuel consumption rising but TCP standing at the same level!!!If players have a choice how to travel to the targets: on maximum speed (more fuel less TCP) or at economy speed (less fuel more TCP).In that case every player will make own decision what level required. Its simple to do if player jumps directly to a mission calculate as travelling at high speed (more fuel less TCP) if indirectly calculate as travelling at economy speed (less fuel more TCP) or something like that.
